Series of 10th Anniversary Academic Activities for the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science: The First China Forensic Science Museum Opening

On May 20th 2016, the Forensic Science Museum of Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science of CUPL opens and Professor Lin Chang, the Dean of Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science(“IELFS”), presides over the ceremony.

About 90 well-known experts and scholars from China and other countries such as Ministry of Education, Ministry of Justice, Supreme People’s Court of China, Maryland Forensic Bureau of US, George Washington University, Max Planck Institute, Supreme Court of South Australia, Peking University, Renming University of China, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University, Sichuan University, Physical Evidence Examination Center of the Ministry of Public Security, Southwest University of Political Science and Law, Shanxi Medical University, Beijing Public Security Bureau, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Justice, Gansu Higher People’s Court attended the opening ceremony together witnessing the birth of first China Forensic Museum.

China Forensic Science Museum (“CFSM”) established by IELFS of CUPL belongs to one of the key research programs of “2011 Plan” - Collaborative Innovation Center of Judicial Civilization ("CICJC") which is not only a comprehensive academic research institution of China including collecting documents and cultural relics of forensic science(forensic medicine and material evidence technique), publicity and education, scientific research but also a research platform for forensic science cultural studies. It has been preparing for building since 2011 and opens until 20th May 2016.

Constructing CFSM is a substantial program to enhance judicial civilization. It has functions like advertising the evolution of judicial civilization and publicizing the knowledge of forensic science techniques. Its main mission is to make domestic and overseas academic research institutions know more about the history of development of china forensic science and to inherit Chinese outstanding civilization of rule of law and technical civilization. Planning research subjects: (a) Study for general history, dynastic history and topic history of forensic science; (b) Study for ‘oral history’ of heroes of forensic science; (c)Organizing relevant research topics; (d) Checking and translating historical documents; (e) Compiling historical documents etc.

During preparation, CFSM serves to the education and researches of history of forensic science for IELFS. After its opening, we welcome Institute and outside scholars to take advantage of the materials of CFSM to do researches. Since there are no similar museums, we don’t have much experience. We sincerely welcome your comments to construct CFSM better.

Brief Introductions to Forensic Science Museum

Forensic Science Museum’s current display areas can be separated into main display area and public display area. The main display area is located in Room 512 5th Floor in Fada Institute of Forensic Medicine & Science (“FdFS”) winging about 230 meters while the public area is located in corridors, classrooms, meeting rooms, halls and yards in FdFS. So far there are 619 collections in the main display area and 50 in the public display area.

The main display area can be separated into 5 subject display areas besides the preface and postscript.

Preface: Showing “The most important thing is the sentence of death penalty in all trials. While sentencing a person to death the most important thing is to find out the clues and truth of case. To find out the clues and truth the most important thing is to rely on the method of survey and inspections” said by Song Ci, the founder of forensic medicine in the world, with the Chinese-English method.

The first display area is “Ancient China”. This area displays 116 collections. There are two aspects: one is a brief introduction about historical track of origin, development, evolution and recurrence of China ancient forensic science with the method of dynastic history; the second one is a brief introduction put in special area about Song Ci, the founder of forensic medicine in the world, and historical narratives of other important ancient figures in the area of forensic science.

The second display area is “Modern China”. This section is separated into Republic of China and People’s Republic of China including 267 collections. Republic of China: sketching the general development situations of forensic science in Republic of China by introducing evolution of authentication system, evolution of discipline construction, cultivation of specialized person, papers of forensic science, biography of Linji the founder of forensic medicine in China. People’s Republic of China: describing the general development situations of forensic science in New China by introducing evolution of authentication system, evolution of forensic science education, introduction to forensic science institutions, forensic science figures in New China, forensic science journal, forensic science societies and associations, monographs and textbooks of forensic science.

The third display area is “general introduction of foreign country”. There are 97 collections. This section includes two parts: the first part is to introduce some information of iconic person and iconic events as well as sketch the process of the origin and development of foreign forensic science with the method of time line. The second is to introduce information about criminal forensic expert Li Changyu (Henry Li), Maryland Forensic Bureau of US, University of Lausanne, South Korea’s national institutes of scientific search in special area.

The forth display area is “Movies and Literature”. There are 51 collections. The main content is to introduce part of movies and literature of forensic science at home and abroad with the method of penal combining with real objects and models etc.

The fifth display area is “History of Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science”. 88 collections are displayed. The main content is to introduce the development history of IELFS by showing general introductions to institute, disciplinary construction, academic research, talent cultivation, forensic science, chronicle of events and wall of portraits, international communication, and overseas institutes of academic research.
